The Order of Eastern Star is not a secret society; secret societies keep their existence hidden and their members do not make known their affiliations. The Order of Eastern Star is a fraternal organization, an auxiliary of a Lodge of Freemasons, religious in character, based on the principle of the Fatherhood of God, the Brotherhood of Man, and the Sisterhood of Woman, which does charitable work in the community and among its members. Through its teachings and ceremonies they seek to make good men and women better and thereby make the world a better place in which to live.
Freemasonry is not a religion, most Eastern Stars belong to an established Church they do not go into the Chapter to worship God or any idols. Each Eastern Star and Freemason goes to their perspective place of worship and continue to practice their individual faith whether it be Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism etc.
The organization is religious, in the sense that one cannot become an Eastern Star unless he/she believes in a higher being; there are no religious test given to prospective members nor is he/she asked to subscribe to any religious tenet or dogma. The discussion of religion or politics are prohibited in the Chapter.
